Location

Every site has its challenges. Unless you have a huge garden, it’s unlikely you’ll find the perfect spot—but don’t despair. Greenhouses capture light on all sides, making them surprisingly adaptable. If you can find a convenient location and looks the part, then you’re off to a good start.

Consider leaving space around the greenhouse for expansion, additional cold frames, waterbutts or storage.

Ensure your greenhouse is conveniently located near your home or garden paths for easy access, especially in bad weather. The more convenient it is the more you’ll use it.

Avoid low-lying areas prone to waterlogging. Good drainage is essential to prevent flooding and maintain a stable growing environment. DRainange inside the greenhouse is often best achieved by using gravel either sides of a central path.

Placing your greenhouse near a water source will make irrigation easier. If you plan to use heating, lighting, proximity to electricity is also important. Consider laying a conduit during  the base construction which will make life easier when feeding in services. Don’t forget you can always collect rainwater from the neat aluminium downpipes and gutters supplied with every cultivar greenhouse.

Don’t forget to think about levels. A stable, level surface is essential for proper drainage, ease of construction, and maintaining the integrity of the structure. In every instant we would provide you with a plan for the base which recommends you prepare a flat level concrete footing.

Even the most robust greenhouses will benefit from a natural windbreak like a hedge, fence, or wall. Don’t go too close though to ensure it still gets good airflow.

Position your greenhouse where it will receive the most sunlight, ideally with the ridge running East to West. That will ensure the sloped roof faces South. If possible avoid placing it in the shadow of buildings and trees.

Sizing

We understand that every garden is different, which is why our greenhouses are designed to adapt to your space and growing needs. Whether you’re planning a compact retreat or a larger horticultural haven, there’s a size to suit.

The length of our greenhouses is modular, allowing you to extend them as long as you need. Whether you’re envisioning a small backyard retreat or a full-scale growing space, our system lets you build to fit. Take a look at our configurator to explore different lengths, layouts, and styles to find the perfect solution for your garden.

We offer three greenhouse widths to suit different spaces and preferences. The smallest width is 6’8″—perfect for compact gardens or where space is limited. Our most popular option is the 8′ model, striking the ideal balance between generous growing space and a manageable footprint. For those seeking more room, the 10’8″ width provides ample space, making it perfect for larger setups or anyone wanting a spacious environment to grow and relax in.

Materials

Our greenhouses are crafted from a choice of high-quality aluminium or long lasting Accoya Wood ensuring durability, low maintenance, and a timeless aesthetic. We offer a choice of two colours of aluminium, each designed to complement different styles and settings:

A soft, warm shade with a more traditional feel. This classic colour is especially popular for greenhouses built on a brick base, offering a timeless and elegant look.

A subtle, sophisticated shade that blends effortlessly into garden spaces without trying to be overly green.

For good reason, this is one of our most popular models. Accoya wood is a sustainably sourced, high-performance timber that comes with an impressive 50-year guarantee, ensuring exceptional longevity. Over time, Accoya naturally develops a silvery patina, which pairs beautifully with the sleek Quartz Grey aluminium frame. The result is a greenhouse that is both timeless and durable, blending effortlessly into its surroundings while standing up to the elements.

Foundations

Like everything in life, a good foundation sets you up for success. The same is true for your greenhouse. A stable, well-built base keeps the structure secure, level, and long-lasting—so it can weather the seasons and serve you for years to come.

If you’re planning to build a brick base, precision is everything. We provide a detailed base plan with exact dimensions—including width, length, height, and door aperture measurements—so you or your builder can ensure the foundation is spot on. Getting these details right from the start will make installation smoother and ensure your greenhouse fits perfectly.

We typically recommend a simple concrete footing. It provides a strong, level surface that won’t shift over time. For best results, make the base slightly larger than the greenhouse footprint—about an inch or so on each side. This gives you a little tolerance during assembly, making the process easier and more forgiving. If you’re still exploring what kind of base to go for, the following page on base options will help guide your decision.

Planning permission

In most cases, planning permission is not required to build a greenhouse, as they are typically classified as "outbuildings." However, certain conditions may necessitate permission. We recommend consulting the Government Planning Permission Portal to ensure compliance with all regulations.

The greenhouse should not cover more than half the total area of your property.

Special regulations apply to listed buildings, which may require permission for any additions.

Outbuildings should generally not exceed a height of 2.5 meters when placed with 2 metres of a property boundary.

Delivery & Access

At Cultivar, we strive to make the delivery and installation of your greenhouse as seamless as possible. Upon receiving your order, we promptly confirm the details and provide a comprehensive statement outlining your greenhouse specifications, deposit, and remaining balance. Typically, our lead time for greenhouse delivery and installation ranges from 6 to 8 weeks. If you require a longer timeframe this can be accommodated.

For customers opting for our fitting service, we typically deliver and install the greenhouse together. We are committed to delivering quality, care, and service without compromise, ensuring that your new greenhouse meets your expectations and provides a lasting addition to your garden.

Please ensure that the access to your site is clear from obstruction and can accommodate large and heavy items. Ground conditions should be clear and safe for our team. If you have any concerns about site access or preparation, don’t hesitate to contact us prior to delivery.

To ensure a smooth installation process, we supply a detailed greenhouse base plan to aid your site preparation. It’s crucial that the base is constructed to the correct dimensions and is both flat and level. If you’re considering building a dwarf wall, we provide specific advice on the appropriate foundation and sizing.

Manual vents can be added to the sides of the greenhouse, or on the plain end of the 8′ and 10’8″ wide models. On particularly warm days, opening the door along with these vents allows a steady draught to flow through the greenhouse, helping to keep temperatures in check.

Our greenhouses feature full-length automatic roof vents, which open and close in response to temperature changes. On our planthouses and glass-to-ground models, this works in conjunction with Cultivar’s unique low-level vents to create a chimney effect. Unlike ordinary greenhouses, this system prevents pockets of warm air from forming, ensuring even airflow throughout.
